Rejoice!

A Sunday walk along the Caldedonian Canal from Inverness to the sea lock (the end of the canal) at Clachnaharry. We kept catching up with this fishing vessel - 'Rejoice' - as it made its way through the swing bridges and locks.

We then caught the vessel up as it made its way via the staircase of locks at Muirtown. 

Through one of the locks.

And another.

It reaches the end of the Caledonian Canal at Clachnaharry and it would then enter the Moray Firth.

This notice was displayed at Windermere railway station. It is the end of the line, so I would most certainly hope that ALL  trains stop there!

Grange-Over-Sands

Postlethwaites hardware shop is a real aladdins cave.

A long established shop in Grange is Lancasters.

Most of the shops in Grange are situated in the middle to higher part of the town, (up a steep hill!), however, there are a few at the lower level as well.

Partly hidden by the tree is the bus to Kendal, having arrived from Barrow-in-Furness.

Beauly

The small town of Beauly lies 10 miles north west of Inverness.

The game of Shinty is very popular in these parts. 

Campbell and Co had some impressive tartans for sale.

Lovat Arms Hotel.

Beauly's claim to fame is that it has the smallest station on the rail netwrork. Not even one coach length long. The original station, the old platforms can be seen above, was closed in June 1960, but a local campaign to get the station reopened was successful in 2002, and it cost £250,000 to be rebuilt.

A train arrives at Beauly from Inverness for the Far north Line to Wick and Thurso.

Since reopening passenger numbers arriving and leaving the station have increased dramatically. =

Grange-over-Sands Promenade

A walk along the promenade at Grange-Over-Sands last Friday on what was a very warm day.

There was an impressive display of flowers throughout the length of the promenade.

The railway line is adjacent to the promenade. This single unit is heading for Barrow-in-Furness.

A very welcome cafe towards the end of the promenade.

The former buildings of the Lido. Now boarded up and looking in a pretty sorry state. 

I managed to get a peek inside the Lido. Derelict. 

There is a foot crossing over the railway line that leads to this delightful path. 

A warning as to just how dangerous the fast tides and quicksands of Morecambe Bay can be. 

Time to walk back to Grange-Over-Sands.

Beauly Priory

the small town of Beauly is situated to the north west of Inverness. 

Beauly Priory was founded in 1230 by the Valliscaulian monastic community.

The Priory still stands today, although roofless and is a visitor attraction.
