Thirlmere

The following set of images of Thirlmere were taken from the top deck, front seat, of the service 555 bus from Lancaster to Keswick. 

Thirlmere is a man made lake / reservoir which was constructed by Manchester Corporation between 1890 and 1894, to provide their then thriving industrial city of Manchester with adequate water supplies.  

The 96-mile long Thirlmere Aqueduct still provides water for the Manchester area. 

There were two smaller lakes here prior to the construction of the reservoir - Leathes Water and Wythburn Water.

It may look like a mini castle overlooking Thirlmere, but it is fact a well disguised pumping station. 

As can be seen from all the above images, it was sunny day with blue sky. Oh for the same again now!
