Windermere Ferry Landing: Part 1 of 2

The Windermere Car Ferry, which also carries foot passengers, operates across Lake Windermere between the Bowness side and what is known as the Windermere Ferry Landing - a quieter side of the Lake. . From there you can walk or drive to the likes of Far Sawrey, Near Sawrey and Hawkshead.
Approaching the Ferry Landing.
The ferry has arrived.

Queue of vehicles waiting for the ferry crossing over to the Bowness side of the lake.
There is also a launch service that operates direct to Bowness Pier, but is more expensive than 50p on the car ferry!
The launch is about to arrive at the Ferry Landing.
A few folk decide to take the direct route to Bowness.
A view northwards along Lake Windermere.

The Mountain Goat 'Cross Lakes' bus service, which I had caught from Hawkshead, waits for passengers at the Ferry Landing for its return journey.
A few boats moored in the creek.

  1. I used to enjoy the car ferry, it always intrigued me how the far bank didn't seem to be getting ant nearer but would then suddenly start to rush towards us! Lovely images and a nice reminder.

  2. Lovely to see the 'Mallard'
This ferry was designed by me in Cornwall and built at Borth in Mid Wales by FL Steelcraft.
She was built in seven sections and transported by road to White Cross Bay on Windermere where the ferry was bolted together, floated into the water and commenced service from Ferry Nab just south of Bowness as you see today.
Great honour and pleasure to me, a Lancashire Lad born in Colne, to be able to add something to the Lake District as I have had a lifelong love of the Lakes and Fells.

  3. Thank you Mike
Should add that I really enjoy your great photographs and comments as it enables me to visit the North West without the trials of the M5 And M6. I am eighty this year so its more difficult for me to get there.
I wish you well and trust that your bus pass does not expire too soon.
