Barrow-in-Furness: Part 2 of 2

There are several fine old buildings in Abbey Road. This one dates from 1900.
I wonder what thus building was originally used for. Possibly a pub? Why the tower at the top?
Entrance to the Citizen's Advice Bureau.
Unfortunately this building seemed to be out of use.
The Conservative Club.
Barrow-in-Furness Library.
The Sir James Ramsden statue. Ramsden (1822-1896) played a prominent role in the development of the town of Barrow-in-Furness. A benefactor of several civic and social facilities, he was knighted in 1872, with the statue being erected in Ramsden Square in the same year.
The Custom House.

The huge 'indoor' dock building in the background is owned by B.A.E. Systems, where Britain's nuclear submarines are maintained, and indeed built, amongst other Naval vessels.
The old town fire station.

Local newspaper headline of the day.

Back at the Town Hall, and time to catch the bus to Kendal.

  1. The old and new architecture works very well together.
