Penrith: St.Andrew's Church & Yard

St. Andrews Church is in the town centre at Penrith. The present Church was built between 1720 and 1722, although there had been a place of worship on this site since the 13th century. The tall tower, was built to help the people of Penrith to defend themselves from Scottish raiders.
The Giant's Grave. It is believed that the King of Cumbria, Owen Caesarius, (900 to 937AD) is buried here. It consists of two eleven foot high stone crosses and four hog back stones. When the grave was excavated, there was a skeleton with a sword.

Crocuses in the churchyard.

There are several architecturally interesting buildings surrounding the Church. This used to house the Parish Rooms.
The Parish Rooms were built in 1894, on the site of what was a cock fighting ring.

Some of the buildings are hundreds of years old and date back to the Tudor period.
