Cartmel Racecourse

It may only be a relatively small racecourse, but it is also extremely popular when race meetings are held. The next one is this coming Bank Holiday weekend. The earliest written account of racing at Cartmel dates back to 1856..
The main buildings on the course. Note how undulating the track is. The course was owned by local landowners and until the Second World War featured primarily amateur jocleys, but after that the racing programme was expanded and professionalised. (pic -Lynda Braithwaite).
The course is on the edge of the village of Carmel in a most delightful setting.  The course is situated on land owned by the Holker Estate and in 1998, Lord Cavendish, bought out the previous management team.
