Preston

Just prior to Christmas I made the short train journey from Lancaster to Preston. A selection of images are shown on what was a fairly grey, overcast and wet day. The first one above, is on arrival at Preston railway station.

Look how grey it is! This is Fishergate.
Several years ago this was the entrance to what were underground toilets. Now closed, the railings survive and the area has been taken over by the adjacent Miller Arcade.
The interior of the Millar Arcade has a really grand feeling to it, with interesting architecture.
Looking in the other direction in the Miller Arcade and it is almost a mirror like image to the previous one.
Outside the Town Hall building. Note the crest of Preston on the base of the lamp standards
Town Hall entrance.
Preston's covered outdoor market.

Preston City Council wanted to demolish the bus station, however, after a campaign to save it, this has now been given listed status. Lancashire County Council has now taken the building over- which apparently is 'a prime example of 'brutalist architecture'  - and it is to undergo a much needed refurbishment.

Cheapside.
The War Memorial has recently undergone a makeover.
Remembrance Day poppies still in place.
Friargate.
One of the entrances to St. George's Shopping Centre.

  1. As usual a selection of interesting shots even though the weather made things difficult. Two things stand out for me; first the term "brutalist Architecture"!! Never heard that before but very apt. The other thing is the underground toilet, we had a Victorian underground toilet below the Pier Approach road in Cleethorpes, now no more. I remember going down there and it had high level water cisterns above the urinals with goldfish in them!! Don't ask how they survived flushing but they did!
The site above ground is now a series of raised flower beds but rumour has it that the toilets are intact and entombed below the ground. Possibly for prosperity but more likely it was cheaper than filling them in. People often accuse me of being cynical....can't think why!!

    1. Thanks David. I believe the underground toilets are also still there in Preston. Like Cleethorpes, simply buried. Like the goldfish story!
