Arkholme

The village of Arkholme is in the Lune Valley and contains several fine, old and desirable buildings. The main road from Carnforth to Kirkby Lonsdale passes through the village, and by the Bay Horse pub.
Attractive entrance to Poole House.
Cottage and former stable block.
The year shown above this door is 1690.
Another attractive cottage
Stepping stones over the wall.

Some work being undertaken here.
As the name suggests, the Lune Valley Ramble follows the River Lune.
A glimpse of the River Lune.
The river, the railway viaduct, and in the distance the unmistakable flat topped shape of Ingleborough, which can be seen for many miles around in all directions.
Definitely not for eating!
Delightful setting of the village church, which is Grade II listed.
There has been a church on this site since 1450.

A view across the graveyard. Some of the trees were being lopped on the right out of the picture.
Cottage and yet more former stables.
The former Arkholme railway station which closed in September 1960. The line remains open for trains between Morecambe. Lancaster, Carnforth and stations to Skipton, before eventually arriving in Leeds.
After closure, the station buildings quickly became a private residence and were once owned and lived in by television comedian and Bullseye presenter, Jim Bowen, who still resides locally.

  1. I am deeply saddened to hear that Jim has passed away. This looks like a lovely peaceful village and I hope to visit it this weekend. Fantastic pictures.
