The Dock Museum: Outside

The Dock Museum in Barrow-in-Furness, charts the town's history built on iron ore and then the shipyards. It is a fascinating place to visit - and it's free!
A look around the outside of the Museum and the surrounding area where there are various reminders of just how important the town of Barrow was in the maritime and shipbuilding  world. Today it is the home to BAE Systems, renowned for the building and maintenance of Royal Navy submarines and ships.
The Dock Musuem, not surprisingly, is in a former dockyard area,.
One of the very large docks.
Some of the docks are still used by various boats, including this fishing vessel, the 'Elainalee.'
Talisker, registered in Barrow. Note how deep the dock is by looking at the ladder down the side of its wall.
The Dock Museum building.
A large set of wheels!

A rocket launcher. A  reminder that Barrow is linked with maintaining and building ships for the Royal Navy.
Tomorrow we'll have a look inside The Dock Museum, at its vast range of exhibits and displays.

  1. What a great place Mike, right up my street. Similar to the Barton on Humber boatyard I often visit.
