Whalley Abbey: Part 1 of 2

The large village of Whalley is near Clitheroe. The Abbey ruins are a short walk from the main street.
The Gatehouse is a listed Grade I building. It is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

An ancient well.
Whalley Abbey is a former Cistercian Abbey. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, the abbey was demolished and a country house was built on part of the site. In the 20th century the house was modified and it is now the Retreat and Conference House of the Diocese of Blackburn.

The ruins of the abbey have been designated by English Heritage as a Grade 1 listed building and is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

There are several archways still standing.

It really is a fascinating place to wander around with a real sense of history to it.

We'll continue our look at the Abbey ruins and the garden tomorrow.
