Coffin Route Walk: Part One of Two

Before starting the walk I called into Wilf's Cafe in Grasmere for a slice of truly scrumptious carrot cake.
The Coffin Route, so called as the name suggests, was the original route, prior to the building of the road, that coffins were carried from Grasmere to Rydal. The walk starts at Dove Cottage in Grasmere which can be seen in the trees. The lane, later to become a track, is to the right.
I didn't see any.
Looking back down the hill toward Grasmere.
My walk took me left here.
Signpost for the Coffin Route.
It's quite a climb at first. A view of Grasmere in the sunshine.

A secluded cottage.

The path becomes narrower.
A beck trickling down off the fells.
It was very peaceful and I doubt if I saw 25 to 30 people on the entire walk.

It was a very hot day, so the shade of the trees was very welcome at times.
The last house before I reached Rydal.
Another view of Grasmere.
The route now followed a stoney and boulder strewn track.

Up the well worn steps.

The first glimpse of Rydal  below.
Colourful. Rhododendrons were everywhere.
Rydal in the sunshine.

  1. We did this walk a few times, many years ago so it brings back happy memories. Lovely images and what a great way to start the walk with a slice of cake!!!

  2. Oh these photos make me want to jump on the first place back home and go to the Lake District! I've been lucky too when I've done this walk, hardly anyone else around, nice weather and the Rhododendrons in bloom are such a perfect time to be there. Lovely photos Mike. Thank you.

  3. It was certainly a good time of the year to do the walk, before it gets too busy during July and August. The colours of the trees and flowers were a bonus.
